Occupying
the same address since 1975, the Gallery exhibits the work of artists,
painters and sculptors in tune with their times, yet who reject
"one-track thinking".
In one of the rooms, a permanent display shows figurative canvases
stripped bare of their trappings, devoid of all superfluity,
intensifying the underlying thought yet further and catching the
onlooker's imagination.
The remaining room is devoted to works which explore a different, yet
related, trend, created by artists seeking to grasp the naked truth of
space through abstraction, never allowing themselves to be overwhelmed
by pure cerebrality, so as to be able to preserve gut instinct and
spontaneous gesture.
The dichotomy between these two forms of expression is no more, the
gulf which divided them in the 1940s/50s with the advent of abstraction
has long since disappeared. The cursor has shifted, the divide is now
between real painting and real sculpture, on the one hand, and the
startling, to say the least, approaches of the present day, on the other.
But figurative or abstract, these are authentic artists, a far cry from
the trendsetters and obtrusive publicists. Working away unstintingly in
the silence of their studios, surmounting obstacles and succeeding in
their research.
They carry with them a vast culture and sink their roots into the
common ground of great French painting, revisiting it with a new
contemporary eye. They safeguard its perpetual rebirth without the need
for a giant tsunami spectacle, wiping out the past.
The gallery also exhibits the work of sculptors devoted to creating
original works in bronze, for sculpture does not attempt to copy
nature, nor even cast from its mould, but transposes it through it slaws
and abstractions to turn it into a timeless reality.
Every year, the gallery stages a major personal exhibition for one of
its artists, incorporating around forty pieces representing the last
three or four years of their work.
ARTFRANCE also holds prestigious events for them in the Museums and
Foundations of France, including the Chateau de Chenonceau, the Museums
of Menton, Valence and Quimper, the Post Office museum in Paris, and
the Orangery at Versailles. On the agenda: SUMMER 2008 at Chateau de
Vascoeuil, retrospective Pierre Boncompain.
Abroad: May in France at the Li Garden, Hong Kong; Shanghai Art Museum, China.
Scheduled for 2008/2009: Shanghai Art Museum and Beijing, China.
Having always been a window open onto the world, the Gallery is very
keen to explore such 'cross influences', and plans to host exhibitions
of selected foreign artists, figurative or abstract, to spread their
renown in Paris and the rest of France.
ARTFRANCE publishes original lithographs, books and exhibition catalogues.
